BladeHQ Limited Edition CRKT/Burnley Obake

imageBladeHQ has an exclusive Columbia River Knife & Tool/Lucas Burnley Obake fixed blade knife for pre-order.  The run will be limited to 500 pieces.  This knife differs from the original with its satin-finished blade.  The previous Obake had a gray and black TiNi “acid-etch.”  My thought is that the new satin kwaiken gives the Obake a much different appearance and it is good.

The faux ray skin samé under the resin-impregnated cord wrapping is now orange, instead of black.  CRKT did a great job for the first Obake’s synthetic ray skin, which was interesting in its gloss Continue reading

An Old Knife Returns, Briefly

Benchmade 910BTSitting at a co-worker’s desk the other day, BS-ing with the troops, I saw a knife at the base of the guy’s computer monitor.  This Benchmade 910BT was beaten, dusty, and decidedly dull.  Shame, because these were once flagship collaboration pieces between the Clackamas, Ore. company and designer Allen Elishewitz.

The model 910, or Stryker, went into pre-production in 1998, with full production beginning shortly thereafter.  For those of us who already owned the Benchmade 970 CQC-7, this tanto knife was racier, with a much more ergonomic handle and rakish blade.  They were a must-buy and I obeyed this edict.

My co-worker returned to his cubicle and saw me pawing his Stryker.  I accused him of neglect.  He apologized then told me I had sold him this very knife back in 2000.  No kidding!  In those days, I was Continue reading

DPx HEST/F URBAN Folder

IMG_0569DPx Gear founder Robert Young Pelton is a specialist in travel to war zones and dangerous places all over the world.  His decades of reporting from conflicts on many continents have made him an authority on what to bring to an armed conflict.

This expertise has led him to design knives.  The DPx HEFT/F URBAN is Mr. Pelton’s first All-American offering.  Here are some highlights:

American 6Al4v Titanium Frame. A frame made of aerospace quality, American 6Al4v titanium alloy in “Battleship Grey” heavy bead blast finish (the “Sterile Edition”). Upgraded options include bronze anodized titanium (the “Bronze Edition”) or a three-dimensional Mr. DP pattern milled into the frame (“The Mr. DP Edition”).

S30V Stainless Steel Blade. A U.S. made and formulated blade steel with a stonewashed finish. We chose a hollow ground blade that’s “shaver sharp” with maximum slicing tooth.

Bearing Pivot. Stainless steel caged bearing pivot hardware for rapid deployment and effortless opening and closing.

Emerson Knives CQC-7 as a Flipper!

ModelEmerson Knives has constructed an exclusive CQC-7 flipper blade, using the ball bearing pivot introduced in their Rangemaster Sheepdog knife.  Here is a description in Mr. Emerson’s own words:

The Emerson CQC-7 knife is the most recognized and iconic tactical folding knife of all time. Sometimes a great design is “finished” just as it comes off the drawing board. When I first designed and built the first CQC-7, I thought that knife was one of those “finished” designs. I thought that it was done – that it couldn’t get any better. And that’s the way the CQC-7 was for quite a few years. Then I developed the wave shaped opening feature. I wondered how it would work on the CQC-7 so I gave it a try and built a couple of prototypes. Needless to say that it worked well, but so much so that it made the original CQC-7 knife better, especially in the tactical world where immediate access and deployment (opening) of your knife can spell the difference between life and death. What I once thought was good, became even better. And thus the “waved” CQC-7 knife was born. This became the standard iteration for the CQC-7 and it became our best selling knife for almost two decades.

Kel-Tec P3AT Pistol Review

Kel-Tec P3AT extended magOne of my favorite concealed carry guns for traveling light in low threat environments is the Kel-Tec P3AT.  At a ghostly 8.3 ounces unloaded, and measuring 5.2 x 3.5 x 0.77 inches, the P3AT evaporates into your clothing.  With the proper holster, it is my go-to for dress dinners, road cycling, and jogging.

While some won’t venture forth without a full-sized pistol, Florida’s climate makes that challenging when the temp and humidity restrict attire options.  I carry a sub-compact 9 or 40 much of the time, but there are situations when a fistful of .380 ACP rounds will work for me.  Better to be armed than not.

While an Uncle Mike’s ankle holster suffices for shirt and tie affairs, I don a Pistol Wear PT-2 concealment holster that hides Continue reading

Outland Kryptos K2 Pre-Order

imageMont Vernon, New Hampshire’s Outland Equipment, Inc. designs and makes “tools for survival in hostile environments” in the USA.  The Kryptos K2 knife is named after a cipher, or coded message, seen in a statue at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.  Kryptos is Greek for “hidden,” so I can see the intent of a concealed knife with what, to me, is a covert name.

Anyway, here is the description of the knife from Outland:

“Outland’s Kryptos knife was developed in cooperation with America’s Special Operations Forces for optimum concealed carry, swift and natural draw, and reliable retention. The handle shape, sheath profile and strap system have been designed for discreet horizontal carry on 1.5” tactical belts. The sheath is ambidextrous for right or left-handed draw and can be positioned anywhere around the belt. The pinky hook locates your hand and gives a secure location for a quick draw, while the heel on the handle gives a solid base for assisted thrusting. The G10 handles are secure even when wet, and the handles have jimping for additional bite.

Smith & Bradley Springfield Classic Field Watch on Kickstarter

Ryan Bradley and Jerommie Smith are at it again.  The founders of Smith & Bradley Watches have a Kickstarter project underway right now with a goal to fund the Springfield Classic Field Watch.  This watch is their take on a storied design that dates back to World War I.  Says Ryan:

“Both of our fathers and grandfathers had classic American watches. Growing up we admired these pieces in hopes that one day they would be ours. That hope became a reality and served as the fundamental groundwork for our company Smith and Bradley.

“Since the end of 2012 we have been designing and building watches at our Sydney Illinois workshop in the hopes of outfitting a new generation of watch lovers with traditional quality time pieces that blend form and function. Along the way we noticed a somewhat disturbing trend. A handful of watch companies, most with a very good product and excessive marketing budgets, began selling the classic American field watch, for high prices often in excess of $1,000. Without a doubt the field watch of generations past, while not sacrificing quality, were far less expensive and therefore more attainable.
